MY EXPERIENCE: Current Issues

Hi guys!

Today I’m going to share my Current Issues class experiences.

In our digitalized world, educational technology in English Language Teaching (ELT) involves the integration of digital tools and resources to enhance language learning experiences. It encompasses various technologies and methods to improve language acquisition, communication skills, and overall language proficiency.

In our first 8 week, we are mostly concerned with theorical part such as The 3×3 model of 21st century learning and  I think, this was essential to build up our base knowledge about the area. However, the concepts are highly dense and confusing to remember.

After the theoretical part of the class, we get involved more with the materials. First, we create corpus-based material by using our gathered information. In my opinion, I doubt that I will use this approach in my professional life because using corpora was complex and teachers have many other options to integrate the technology to the education.

Secondly, we informed about flipped classrooms and also use of multi-media. Following to this information, we create a flipped class material which is suitable for young learners. This task was hard to complete because creating a video with correct sound system and also well integrated pedagogy was crucial and compelling.

Thirdly, create AR/VR teaching material. I enjoyed the creation process and also I find AR/VR very interesting so that, to get students’ attention this technique is significant.

Finally, we create AI based material. Even though I use AI in my learning process, I have never thought about the AI in teaching process. In our last class we are informed about two face of the coin and that certainly give new educational view.

In conclusion, I find Current Issues class very effective and beneficial. However, we had to deal with too many tasks, and they sometimes made me anxious and stressed. My suggestion to new comers to this class is that you should use fluently various designing platforms  such as canva, animaker etc.

WE ARE MAKING AI INTEGRATED TEACHING MATERIAL

Hi guys!

Today, I’m going to talk about my creation process of AI-integrated teaching material. First, I want to explain what AI is, Artificial Intelligence, refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. These tasks include learning, reasoning, problem-solving, perception, language understanding, and speech recognition. Therefore, AI has the potential to play a transformative role in education by enhancing various aspects of the learning experience, making it more personalized, efficient, and accessible. Considering these information, I assigned to create AI integrated material so that my partner Ece Keskin and I tries to find the most suitable AI tool to enhance high school students’ vocabulary learning. After some research we decided to use ‘’Quizlet’’ which is an app for students and teachers. It creates various activities accordingly the information that you give and give you feedback and correction.

In order to create our material, we use ‘’ Canva’’ and we used MEB book for reading texts that used in our material. In Step 1, we create a set of vocabulary from the text that it is covered former class. So that, students have already familiar with the words and can focus on exploring the app. Then, students create their accounts and explore the app while they are doing the activities.

In Step 2, students are divided in 3 people groups and given a new reading text to find important and unknown vocabulary with their friends. Then, every group crate their own set of vocabulary. Afterwards, they check out other groups sets and hopefully learn the chosen items.

Our primary aim is to teach students how to learn and practice vocabulary outside the classroom and via our chosen AI tool Quizlet students personalized their learning and can control their learning process. Thank to this app, students can exposure selected vocabulary many times in various ways. For example, they can match, write, or read aloud the items etc. to accomplish the set learning.

All in all, creation of AI integrated material process highly effective and significant for me because I am still student and to be teacher so that I must be aware of the novelties that ease the learning process such as AI tool called Quizlet etc.

WE ARE MAKING AR/VR INTEGRATED TEACHING MATERIAL

Hi guys!

Today, I’m going to talk about my creation process of AR/VR integrated teaching material. First, let me explain ‘’AR/VR’’. AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) are technologies that immerse users in computer-generated environments or enhance their perception of the real world. AR overlays digital information (such as images, text, or 3D models) onto the real-world environment. It blends the virtual and physical worlds. For example, AR is commonly used in applications like mobile games, navigation apps, and in industrial settings for tasks like maintenance and training. On the other hand, VR creates a completely immersive, computer-generated environment that users can interact with. It typically involves the use of VR headsets that cover the user’s eyes and ears, blocking out the real world. For examples, VR is used for gaming, simulations, training, and entertainment experiences. It provides a sense of presence in a digital environment. Both AR and VR have diverse applications across various industries, including gaming, healthcare, education, architecture, manufacturing, and more. They offer unique ways to engage users and provide immersive experiences, but they differ in terms of the level of immersion and the way they interact with the real world. In the light of these information and technology, AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) have the potential to revolutionize the field of English language teaching by providing immersive and interactive learning experiences such as virtual language immersion, real-time language translation and language simulations. Therefore, integrating AR and VR into English language teaching offers the potential to make language learning more dynamic, engaging, and effective by providing students with immersive and contextually rich experiences.

My partner Ece Keskin and I work on project called ‘’ Explore a city abroad’’ and we create worksheets as a handout to guide students to explore the city ‘’ Rome’’.  In first section, I introduce two landmarks of the city that are Colosseum and Fountain Trevi. Put their pictures on the handout and link it to a 3D object and 360 videos for students to explore. For each landmark, I ask students some questions based on what they view or watch. In second and third section, my pair introduces a glorious museum and a significant figure for Rome via 3D object and 360 video. In fourth section, students complete the handout with a postcard project. The project covers what students have explored so far.  So that, they can create a postcard for their friends or family to sent from Rome. We choose ‘Canva’ as a tool because it is free and easy to use and give students clears instructions. Also, we supply them some examples to introduce the genre and want them to apply the same criteria.

All in all, my AR/VR integrated teaching material preparation process absolutely broadened my horizon and also, I believe that ingratiated AR/VR in the English classes could make lesson more interesting and captivating in our modern digitalized world.

WE ARE MAKING FLIPPED CLASS LESSON

Hi guys!

Today, I’m going to talk about my creation process of flipped class lesson. First of let me explain ‘’ What is flipped classroom?’’. The flipped classroom model is an instructional strategy where traditional elements of a lesson are reversed. Instead of students receiving direct instruction in the classroom and then working on assignments at home, they review instructional materials such as videos or readings which are provided by the instructor, independently outside of class. Classroom time is then used for interactive activities, discussions, and hands-on exercises, allowing students to apply what they’ve learned with the guidance of the teacher. This approach aims to make the learning process more student-centered and engaging, leveraging technology for content delivery outside of the traditional classroom setting. The flipped classroom model has many different benefits including active learning and individualized pacing etc. However, it is important to recognize that flipped classrooms may not be suitable for every context or without its challenges. For instance, technical difficulties, such as internet connectivity problems or issues with the learning platform, can disrupt the learning process and frustrate both students and teachers or student accountability, some students may struggle with self-directed learning and may not complete the required pre-class activities, leading to a lack of preparedness for in-class discussions. All in all, is obvious that flipped classroom approach is new student centered model with some challenges and we were assigned to create a flipped classroom lesson.

I and my partner Ece Keskin chose the vocabular lesson for 5th graders and regarding their proficiency level and curriculum we decided to use games & Hobbies unit. The unit includes basic vocabulary like ride a bike, go swimming etc. in order to teach them we repeat the vocabulary in meaningful sentences and provide them with relevant pictures and photos. Also, we consider the Mayer’s principles to teach the kids the most efficient way.

Firstly, I watch some similar videos that provided by my teacher to get some idea. According to my research, I decided to use the website called ‘’ Animaker’’. the website is easy to use, and it provides various temples so that you can make changes while using the basic lines. However, attaching the voices and synchronize the music with the video was challenging.

On the other hand, my partner create the puzzle with selected words by using website called ‘’  Wordwall ‘’ so that the kids who watched our video could establish solid learning and schemata.

All in all, making flipped classroom lesson was interesting and challenging but I believe that the flipped classroom model encourages a shift from passive to active learning, with students taking a more active role in their education.

WE ARE MAKING A CORPUS-BASED MATERIAL

Hi guys!

Today, I’m going to talk about my corpus-based material creation experience. However, I want to give you quick info about corpus because it is important to understand the base of the metarial so that we can make a sufficient and successful material. A corpus refers to a large and structured collection of texts or written material. It could include written works, transcripts, articles, or any other type of text. Corpora (plural of corpus) are often used in linguistic analysis, natural language processing, and other fields to study language patterns, usage, and behavior. On the other hand, this system can be integrated into EFL classes via digital devices and with expert teachers in the field. Therefore, we need to be familiar with Data-driven language learning (DDLL) which involves using authentic language data to enhance language learning. Instead of relying solely on traditional teaching methods, educators leverage real-world language examples and corpora (large collections of written or spoken texts) to help students develop their language skills.

According to DDLL and task-based learning methodology, I and my partner created a material which is suitable for 11th grade students through ‘’Canva’’. Our topic was ‘’would and used to’’ grammatical set phrases and I chose the ‘’SKELL’’ corpus tool so that my students can use it comfortably and effectively.

Firstly, my partner Ece Keskin and I examined the elaborate rubric which is provided through my teacher, and I set 4 different subtitles includes: step 1: testing the knowledge, step 2: improve the knowledge via selected corpus, step 3: defining the different usage of the phrases, step 4: practicing the discovery learning.

In our material, we want to fulfill important objectives for example:

step 1: my students will be able to find the differences between would and used to.

Step2: my students will be able to examine the set phrases via selected corpus.

Step3: my students will be able to associate the rules and the usage with example sentences which they select from corpus.

Step 4: my students will be able to provide correct answer to given questions accordingly their current learning.

In the process of crating a material in the Canva was not immensely difficult. The websites is very usable anyone who has even a little time can figure out how create a document or poster etc. Also last year in digital learning class I used the website to make a movie poster from my favorite book.  Therefore, I was used to it. However, I had to refresh my knowledge and the creating the material took some time but if you are more skillful in these types of use of technology, you can create your own material faster.

All in all, creating a corpus-based material is very educating and interesting. Even though group works could be sometimes messy, me and my friend make it thorough one or other way. 😉

MY EXPERIENCE: Technology Class

We are living in 21st century’s world, and like every other century, our century has its own key subjects such as global, economic, health etc. 21st century’s key subjects differ by field to field, but we did focus on the characteristics on the education field. Even though I was living 21th century, I wasn’t literally aware of its effects on education approaches, students’ and teachers’ behaviors.

Firstly, we learned that students in 21st century adopt very different approaches, as it includes many dramatic social, technological and economic transformations. Thus, students’ learning is shaped around producing, synthesizing, and evaluating information from a wide variety of subjects and sources with an understanding of and respect for diverse factor. Also, as candidate of future teacher, understanding my audience and labeling some crucial elements in teaching create clear schema in my mind. Next, we applied our knowledge to various tasks  which  is attained by our teacher every other week.

One of our first tasks was creating a study blog. Frankly, I  understand it’s usage, but I couldn’t really get the technical phase and tried to do my best. The study blog was our base, and we attached our every task there. As a result, we can see what we have done whole semester in one page.

My favorite tasks were creating a podcast and digital poster. In podcasting, I choose the option called one minute to improve the world. Meanwhile, I challenge myself to find a creative opinion about the task. In addition, I rally like advocating my idea via speaking in English. In making a poster, I choose make a movie poster according to my favorite book The Brothers Karamazov from Dostoevsky. Creating a movie poster was quite fun, because being a fun girl and supporting it via tis colorful task was unusual.

Finally, chase another task in every week was exhausted due to submission dates and sometimes my lack of proficiency in terms of technical issues. Also, we had to cooperate with people in many tasks in order to improve our collaboration skill. However, it was very hard to sustain and make use of it because of my learning style. It didn’t fit me really.

All in all, I learned a lot from this class, and I am glad that I have a  slightly certain knowledge about how adapt my teaching to the technology and how make use of technology. However, I could be better if some tasks were be individually too like podcasting and I could be more careful about my assignments if our time wasn’t that much limited.

WE ARE MAKING ‘HOW TO MAKE?’ VIDEO

Hi guys!

Today, I’m going to talk about my video creation experience.

One of my last tasks was creating a digital video collaboratively. Therefor, my friend Ece Keskin and I choose to make a tutorial video.

First, we couldn’t decide what to make. Also, we had limited time to create the video, so we share the responsibility. Ece wanted to shoot the video and send it to me. After that, I edited the video and added my voice.

Frankly, it was not the funniest experience I ever had because it was complex. There are many element that I had to apply correctly. For example, mixing the voice and the music sound, making them clear and understandable etc. However, I did my best to make it real.

All in all, this task was not my favorite, but I grateful to my friend and I happy to finished it.

Check out our video 😊

WE ARE MAKING A MOVIE POSTER

Hi Guys!

Today, I’m going to talk about my movie poster experience.

This week’s task was creating a digital poster which has creative two options. I choose making a movie poster from a book that I love ‘’The Brothers Karamazov’’.

Firstly, I did some research about the book, even though I read it this mount. I create a Pinterest section in order to use a lot of inspiring photos and quotes. I choose book’s main characters from  diverse oil painting according to their physical features and of course my imagination. After I decided to my characters, I choose the main scene that shown the book’s dramatical climax. In addition, I visit various internet websites and study well-known posters so as to movie posters are belong to a specific genre. Next, I used website called PosterMyWall so as to bring my items together. I used site’s search-box, and found proper example. As a result, I started working on that sample. I wasn’t sure about the thing I do while I was working in the website , but I tried to find how to use it correctly.

All in all, my digital movie experience was fun, because I love books and movies. Also, the web-site I preferred was easy to use. As being a teacher candidate , I find that the task is quite beneficial to the cultural and technological improvement of students, because they combine two different artistic items.

WE ARE RECORDING A PODCAST!

Hi Guys!!

Today I’m going to talk about my ‘Podcast’ experience.

This wee task was creating a podcast and to be honest it was little bit complicated. Our teacher gave us four different options and they were creating a vox-pop, improving the world, creating a chant/song, a sound-rich story. Firstly, I thought about creating a chant. However, I think my singing is not that magical. After a while an idea occurred. Personally, the idea was creative and unique, hence, I choose the improving the world option. Next, I did search on the internet about ‘’manifesting’’ and gathered the information such as its meaning and its tools. Then I wrote my script. The topic was about my interest, so I really did enjoy. Our teacher presented us some tools in order to record. I explore them and, of course, I choose the simplest one called ‘Vocaroo’. Finally, I read my script and took my record. However, I’m mot sure about the quality of the sound because I have never used my computer in such a task.

All in all, recording the podcast little bit nervous but it was. In my opinion, podcast can be used efficient ways in field of education. Teachers can create their own podcast as a listening tool or students verified their tasks with correct form of podcasting.

check out my podcast :))

WE’RE MAKING A PROJECT BASED ON INTERNET

Hi guys!

Today I’m going to talk about website called ‘Padlet’. I want to create a wall about air pollution with my friends. We list our topic under WHAT WE KNOW, WANT TO KNOW, and WHAT WE LEARNED. To make these KWL chart understandable and readable without boring we choose to use padlet because this website is comfortable to use. It is easy to learn how to create a wall and adds things such as photos, GIF etc.

We focus on the topic ‘air pollution’. Hence, itis highly crucial issue around the world. In addition, this issue’s effects influence our environment that we live in. That’s because we need to be conscious and aware about it.

To ask and state clearly, first I make a schema about the topic according the KWL. After grouping them correctly, I stared search on the web. Finally, I put my opinions and gatherings that found in the web in order and create my charts.

All in all, it was important experience. We learn how to make web-based project, work collaboratively. Also, we have done further research on an important subject and thus we have become more conscious individuals.

My friends in the group: Sude Özer, Ece Keskin, Asude Kuru
